Testing-day checklist and site prep for general contractors

Most testing delays come from the site, not the test. Work through this list before the tester arrives, and keep a copy on the job.

What the report should include

Project: ____________________________   Date: ____________   Area(s): ____________________

Two weeks out: documents and decisions

  • Collect current installation instructions and data sheets for the flooring, adhesive, primer, patch or leveler, and any coating.
  • Write down the test method each product names and its limit for that method. Note the edition of the standard the spec calls for.
  • Confirm who orders the testing and who receives the report (owner, GC, flooring contractor, product rep).
  • Mark up a floor plan with the areas to be tested and their approximate square footage.
  • Ask whether the slab has a vapor retarder, post-tension cables, radiant tubing or in-slab conduit.

One week out: building conditions

  • Schedule permanent HVAC (or equivalent conditioning) so the space is at service temperature and humidity before testing starts.
  • For in-situ RH testing, plan for at least 48 hours at service conditions before readings.
  • Plan to keep exterior doors, roll-ups and windows closed through conditioning and testing.
  • Hold wet work in the test areas (tile setting, texture, pressure washing) or schedule around it.
  • Check for active leaks, irrigation overspray near the slab edge, or recent water events, and fix them first.

Access and surface

  • Clear test areas of materials, debris and equipment. Bare concrete must be reachable at each location.
  • Confirm whether old flooring or adhesive needs to come up, and who does it.
  • If old resilient flooring or black adhesive is present, confirm it is asbestos-free before any grinding or scraping.
  • Approve drilling for in-situ RH tests, and confirm utility and post-tension clearance at each spot.
  • Arrange site access, work hours, escorts, keys or gate codes for the setup visit and the reading visit.

Testing day

  • Walk the locations with the tester and agree on any changes from the plan.
  • Record the indoor temperature and humidity, and note how the HVAC is running.
  • Tell all trades that probe and dome locations are hands-off until the final reading.
  • Flag each location with tape or a cone, and keep carts, lifts and cleaning water away.
  • Photograph each location as set up.

After the readings

  • Confirm you will receive a written record with locations, times, conditions and readings.
  • Compare results with each product’s written limit for that method, not with a general number.
  • Decide who patches and restores test locations.
  • If results exceed a limit, review options with the flooring and adhesive manufacturers before installing.
  • Keep the report with the project closeout documents.
Who decides the method and the numbers The selected products’ written instructions and the project specification set the method, the number of tests and the acceptable results. The test counts below come from the standards and kit instructions; your spec may require more.
